— Five K-9s from Sarasota, a helicopter and more than two dozen law enforcement officers searched a brush-filled area of North Naples on Wednesday morning after a tipster called Collier County authorities about two high-profile missing persons cases.

The search teams combed a piece of land on the east side of Vanderbilt Drive, just north of Wiggins Pass Road, less than two miles from a cemetery where Terrence Williams was pulled over by former Collier County sheriff’s deputy Steven Calkins on the day Williams disappeared in 2004.

“I’m happy. I’m just so happy that people are calling in and saying what they saw,” Williams’ mother, Marcia Williams, said Wednesday. “They just need to come forward with it so they can help me and help the sheriff’s department.”

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Karie Partington said authorities were searching an area with footpaths that led to some mangroves. The tipster had seen a patrol car in the area around the time the two men disappeared, she said.

Both Williams and Felipe Santos disappeared within months of each other after separate encounters with the same Collier deputy — Calkins.

Williams, then 27, last was confirmed seen with Calkins on Jan. 12, 2004. Santos, then 23, was last spotted with Calkins on Oct. 14, 2003.

Calkins was fired in 2004 after former sheriff Don Hunter said he became uncooperative in the investigations.

The area off Vanderbilt Drive first was searched in April 2004 “because it was an area we knew that deputy Calkins had been known to go to,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michelle Batten said.

Both Batten and Partington declined to comment on what, if anything, officials found Wednesday, citing the ongoing investigation. But they said the Collier County Medical Examiner’s Office was not at the scene.

Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue’s founder Joe Abrams said five dogs searched over an area about 660 acres.

“We searched everything we could,” he said, adding that some areas were “impassable.”

Abrams also would not say if anything had been found.

Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue was used because they are “highly trained,” and have cadaver dogs, which Collier County does not have, Batten said.

Any new information generated “will be used as part of the investigation,” she said.

Officials did not say if they planned to interview Calkins again, but in an April appearance on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, lead detective Kevin O’Neill said Calkins was “absolutely in the middle of the investigation.”

“Everything I turn to brings me right back to Steve Calkins,” he told interviewer Randi Kaye.

Calkins did not answer a reporter’s knocks at his door Wednesday afternoon, but told the Daily News in 2006 he did nothing wrong and had fallen on “very bad luck.”

The cases regained national momentum after the television network Investigation Discovery featured them on a show called “Disappeared” in October. Actor Tyler Perry began posting about Williams and Santos on his Facebook and Twitter accounts after seeing the show, saying he was “Beyond Outraged By This!”

Marcia Williams said the show also helped her talk to her son’s four children, who live in Chattanooga, Tenn., and had not been fully aware of the circumstances behind their father’s disappearance.

“I promised them that I’m going to be here until I find out what happened to their daddy,” she said. “They do understand that. I’m not going to let them down.”

The “Disappeared” episode will air again Monday at 7 p.m. on Investigation Discovery. Anyone with information in the cases is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 239-252-9300 or southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

Sadly even if they find their remains this deputy has pretty much gotten away with a double murder. The fact is any evidence that would have been recovered has been out in the elements for years now. The only justice and/or judgment will be before God.

One thing to consider is that nobody wants to spend any money on these homeless and mentally ill types when they are alive, but then when they get murdered (many of them do), the Justice system spends hundreds of thousands of dollars, and sometimes millions of dollars; to find the dead bodies and prosecute the killers.

That really does not make a lot of sense. If more of these marginal people were given mental health care, vocational assistance, and other low cost help, then every community might save a few lives and a few million dollars too.

I am glad to see local law enfocement posting on these boards. It definitely builds public confidence! I could not agree more. They deserved to be murdered. I don't know how long you have been here to "protect and serve" but your passion for honesty and integrity shine like a fireball in the night! Now..if someone did the same thing to calkins..don't you agree we would be much better off?

I would be of the opinion that the most significant tip to date that has spurred this renewed vigor in this unresolved case would be that Sheriff Rambosk has filed for reelection and its just one of those things that the could come back to haunt him anytime between now and November. A question. Would this be the same area they found human remains that were publicly identified as an elderly(around 90 years old)male but rumors swirl even today that the body was that of a 25-35 year old male identified as a CCSO informant who sent a couple CCSO Deputy's to the big house and several more to to the unemployment line? Anyway what ever the real motivation is behind the new energy behind this I for one would like to see a conclusion and closure in these occurrences and hope that the energy spreads to other lingering and very qustionable issues with the CCSO and Kevin's reputation as a very questionable leader of this organization. We deserve better, the good CCSO employees deserve better and Sheriff Rambosk can certainly do better!!! I would hope to be served a big fat slice of "humble pie" and provide "apology snacks" to all those individuals who deserve them once I'm proven wrong about mine opinion in regards to Sheriff Rambosk!!!

They deserved to be murdered? Perhaps profiler meant that they deserved to die.

Now I know that Collier County was one of the last places settled in our republic, but gang, this ain't the Wild West.

I may be out of step, but I thought law enforcement officers were paid by us to follow the law while they enforce the law.

But here people praise a LEO for being judge, jury, and executioner.

By definition, no one deserves to be murdered.

Kinda looks like your accusing former Deputy Caulkins of some illegal act! Could you clarify your comment before its removed by someone? Unless your him and your confessing to a crime then you either know something you should report or you should be nervous that Law Enforcement will seek your identity in order to gather more information. Ya gotta be careful what you post because the anonymity can disappear with a valid search warrant in order to gather additional information that you clearly may have!!! Don't let your fat little stubbies and your cloudy mind ruin your day!!! Just a little unfriendly advise, do what you want with it.

Just how many serial killers reside in SWFL?

Remember Wendy Hudakoc? Last seen with Ron Depeppo (his car was found by CCSO burned out shortly after her disappearance.) He is still around getting quoted in the paper regarding homeless camps in Bonita, but no Wendy.

Remember Heidi Ann Zampell, last seen walking up the driveway of Pastor Arthur Simms house. He can be found at a local “Church,” but Heidi is nowhere to be found.

Then there is Francis McCloskey – his brain matter was found covering the walls of a jail cell in Collier County, and Timmy McNulty, the inmate charged with cleaning it up who after being released, disappeared and later his body found murdered.

The list goes on and on and on.

MisterK writes:

From a visitors standpoint, there may be an appearance of a paradise lifestyle. But, when the seedy underbelly of SWFL is uncovered, paradise becomes parasitic piracy.

They both had jobs and both had families. Santos was on his way to work when Calkins grabbed him. You are an idiot.

Why did it take Sarasota County to come down here and do CCSO's job?

Also, how are CCSO and the Naples News trying to find out what happened and develop tips/leads if they have NEVER POSTED A PICTURE OF CALKINS?????

A little comprehension does wonders. Sarasota was brought in, as stated in the article, because their K-9 unit has cadaver dogs and we don't.

My comment was in jest to the jerk that suggested these people deserved to be murdered. I don't know either of these people. I do know something horrible happened at the hands of one of collier county nazi gestapo thugs. It is well known they routinely lie under oath. We have one local gestapo piece of work that has quite a reputation for planting drugs on people. In fact, many of the local judges refuse to accept reports submitted by johnny joe "the planter" cisneros. Why they keep him on the force is unknown..but it serves as a brutal honesty as to the committment of these nazi thugs to protect and serve their own interests. As long as cisneros is on the force I encourage all people to NEVER help them! They deserve what they dish out. An eye for an eye so to speak. I would almost bet that the comment (deleted by NDN left wing censors) suggesting these people deserved to be murdered is by one of the sociopath gestapo nazis whose mind has been so demented into believing that everyone is a criminal and deserves to be hurt in any manner possible is probably one of the local deputies. They are LOWLIFE DIRTBAGS whose only intention is to get away with breaking as many laws as they desire while supposedly "earning" a free retirement off the backs of taxpayers. I know one cop that is retired. He has told me that he is not allowed to make any money because that would affect his free retirement. SO...we works under the table for $100 a day. So..he is a PERFECT example of the integrity and honesty of these thugs. He victimized many people wearing his badge for supposedly breaking the laws..but he has NO PROBLEM breaking the law and being a tax cheat because it benefits HIM! He is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of how these thugs work and their mentality. Your GREATEST THREAT is not from some "crook" walking the streets...it is from these thugs with a badge. I do believe many of them deserve bad things should happen to them for their crimes against the citizens. They have DESTROYED what amerika used to be. They are FRAUDS. They go home to their wives and children and HIDE what they do to innocent people. I hope they burn in hell.
sig heil comrad...welcome to the new amerika!

apparently a kid told me he got pulled over in east naples by cisernero because he was told "he left a bad neighborhood" and he wanted to search the kids car. the kid told him to stick it because he had no probable cause to search the vehichle. so the kid was profiled because he was driving out of a bad neighborhood. corruption at its best. and as stated nothing is done against a deputy who has 19 complaints against him. people need to write to the department of justice and get this crook off the streets before he ruins another kids life. don't wait for rambosk to clean up his department because it will never happen!

amerika is a POS nazi police state. It deserved 9.11 for its crimes against innocent people around the world. amerika is the worlds most sophisticated terrorist state to ever exist. It kills millions of people (in the name of world peace LOL!!! ) ...this is why it deserved 9/11. On a local note...criminal gestapo agents and their families got a little taste of justice in OKC. HOPEFULLY there will be more freedom fighters willing to make the ultimate sacrifice like the pilot that flew his plane into gestapo IRS headquarters. He had a poor kill ratio at 1/1...while freedom figher McVeigh had an excellent kill ratio of 167/1. Remember andrew young..former ambassor to the UN stated the US has thousands of political prisoners. WOW...one of them ACTAULLY TOLD THE TRUTH! Thanks Mr Young for being a true HONEST amerikan!

If you cut your pills into four pieces and only take one of the little pieces instead of your full dose, it won't do you any good. Please call your pharmacy for a refill and remember to take the dose your psychiatrist has prescribed.

As for justice, sometimes it just takes time...eg the Natalie Halloway case.

I hope and pray that those of you who are mean and insensitive, never have to hear anyone say that your child(ren) deserve to die.
