Local law enforcement stepping up DUI enforcement through Labor Day

Local law enforcement agencies are joining thousands of other agencies across the nation in a national crackdown on impaired driving through Labor Day.

Both Collier County sheriff’s deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers will be participating in the 2011 National Impaired Driving Crackdown, which is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ongoing program to reduce the number of impaired driving-related fatalities.

Starting this weekend, FHP auxiliary troopers will volunteer to increase the patrol on the road.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office will conduct special enforcement operations throughout the county during this period, including sobriety checkpoints and roving saturation patrols or “wolf packs.”

In addition, all FHP personnel, including those who are normally assigned to administrative duties, will patrol interstates and other major state roads during the four-day holiday.

In 2009, NHTSA reported 10,839 people were killed in U. S. motor vehicle crashes. Alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 32 percent of all motor vehicle crash fatalities during 2009, or an average of one fatality every 48 minutes.

Hope they have a Judge at some of the stops for those who refuse a breathalizer test. This stops the delaying tactics so the blood alcohol level will lower hopefully under the limit.

If a driver politely declines to submit to chemical testing for BAC, these implied consent laws impose penalties. In most states a driver’s license is automatically suspended for up to one year based on that refusal to cooperate, even if he or she is ultimately not found guilty of DUI.

They oughta do the same thing for texting while driving! As a professional driver I see people doing this all the time and they ARE distracted and not paying attention.

Your post is totally correct. This happens all the time here in Collier. It also happened to me.
That is one of the reasons I am so focused on removing the corruption here in Collier County.
Towtom, email me at this web site so we can add your case to the documented cases I already have
from others. Thanks.

Government workers of any kind do not need to be stopping US Citizens going about their business without Probable Cause, the most basic of rights guaranteed to us. Nobody wants unsafe roads, nor do they want chemically impaired drivers on these roads. But do not violate other rights while trying to administer safe driving laws. Both safe roads and the retention of basic citizen rights can co-exist successfully. Stop the use of driver check points.
